Abstinence is becoming more popularThe number of young people who choose abstinence is growing every day. More teens are putting off having sex. New stats say that fewer teens are engaging sexual activity than in the past and fewer teenagers are having babies. According to a recent national study, the rate of girls ages 15 to 17 having sex dropped from 38 percent in 1995 to 30 percent in 2002. For boys it was 43 to 31. As one teen from Colorado Springs says: "You have to respect yourself to say, 'no, I'm going to wait. Because I respect myself that much'." Having sex doesn't make you coolIt can make you pregnant. It can give you a life-changing or life-threatening disease. Having sex won't solve your problems, cure loneliness or make you feel loved. Some young people become sexually active to feel loved or connected. Having sex for the wrong reasons can actually make you feel even more alone. "Sex won't make him yours, and a baby won't make him stay," says one teen from Wheatridge. Recent studies have found that two-thirds of teens who have had sex say they wish they had waited until they were older. Nearly seven out of ten teens do not think it is okay for high school age kids to have sexual intercourse. In a study of Colorado teens, nearly one-third of the teens who have had sexual experiences say they are currently abstinent. "It's never too late.
